Frequently Asked Questions
Q. My mother-in-law raised a fine son, but I can't get her to stop talking baby talk to our one year old son. She is a doting grandmother, but I am worried that her silly baby talk will cause our toddler to develop speech problems. How can I get her to stop?
A. It sounds like you have two questions. First, Will hearing babytalk cause a child to develop speech and language problems? And secondly, What is a grandparent's role in a child's early years?
Of course, babies and toddlers do understand adult talk and it is better to talk normally, but try to put things into perspective. Begin by checking ages and stages to see if your child is progressing in speech and language development according to the guidelines. If he hears plain adult language most of the time clearly spoken in your home, he should be able to interpret Gran's babytalk as "endearments" rather than "normal" language. Involve Gran in reading and play with you and your son.

Grandparents can have a powerfully positive influence in the lives of young children. And they can help you to get away from the big job of parenting now and again. Perhaps it would help Gran if you just try to pronounce the words properly by affirming what she is saying rather than trying to correct her. Those lapses into baby talk will likely decrease as time goes on.
